What keeps a person within the same line of work and for the same company for 16 years and counting? Jilly, the lettings manager at Andrew Granger & Co in Market Harborough shares an interesting in-sight in our latest ‘a day in the life of’.
What made you chose this industry and area of work?
I happened to meet an old friend who was working for Andrew Granger & Co at a time when I was looking for something new, having worked for Tower Publishing (now CDS Global) for 15 years. One thing led to another and here we are 16 years later….
How does your working day start?
Usually with a McDonalds coffee, at my desk for 7.30am, to enjoy the peace and quiet before the typically crazy day starts at 8.30am.
What can a typical day involve for you?
This is hard as no two days are ever the same in lettings. We have the day-to-day items we need to get through - running through the new emails, checking all compliance is up to date, checking the fresh industry news, which seems to be changing nearly daily at the moment - but you can also get anything and everything from mice infestations, to locked in tenants, to walls falling down – it’s certainly never boring!
What do you like most about your job?
I love the team I work with. We always keep the humour in the day which is so important as sometimes this area of work can get very stressful.
What is the most challenging aspect of your job?
I think it can be challenging to deal with things when they go wrong for people. We can have very sad situations and these need to be dealt with, with compassion and an understanding attitude. All the team here are very professional and there is always someone to help and give advice for situations we may not have dealt with before.
What do you like to do when you’re not at work?
I really enjoy a bit of DIY although my husband does not! I have two hounds - a Cavapoo and a terrier who I love to go walking with. I do appreciate a good holiday in the sun too, for a well-earned rest. I have a great family, three children and four beautiful grandchildren who also keep me very busy.
Are you an early bird or a night owl?
Definitely an early bird now…..I’m well past the age of burning the candle at both ends!
