Andrew Robinson tells us what’s kept him in the industry for over 34 years

Tue 20 September 2022

It’s been a while since we last chatted to Director, Andrew Robinson BSc (Hons) FRICS, MARLA, ICIOB Chartered Surveyor, RICS Registered Valuer, who heads up Andrew Granger & Co’s Professional Team, which operates out of the Leicester Office.

The ‘Professional Team’ includes an Estate Management Team, Development Valuation Specialists, the Commercial Team, and the Survey and Valuation Team.

Here, Andrew tells us what’s kept him in the industry for over 34 years….

What made you chose this industry and area of work?

I’ll never forget the conversation I had with the school careers advisor all those years ago. Once I’d completed their questionnaire, they suggested that I should become a lawyer or a cricket ground keeper. Weirdly, I’ve ended up with a job somewhere in between the two! Once I’d completed a degree in surveying, I started work at the District Valuers Office for HMRC. My colleagues at the time never wanted the unusual valuations but they were the ones I really enjoyed – particularly when out and about in the countryside.

I was asked to join Andrew Granger & Co by Andrew Granger himself in 1999 when our professional paths crossed, and within two years of that I was promoted to being a Partner of the company, and Director of Professional. That was 23 years ago now and I still love what I do.

How does your working day start?

Always with a decent coffee, and a meeting with my PA and team, where we try to persuade each other that we can get through everything that’s on our list. It’s best to be optimistic!

What can a typical day involve for you?

Once the team and I have had our morning meeting, my day largely involves client meetings and site visits, putting together reports, and ultimately trying to get the best result for our clients in maximising the value of their assets.

What do you like most about your job?

Quite simply the team here are brilliant, which makes coming to work more enjoyable - along with the variety of the job. You also can’t beat the feeling of seeing a project come to fruition that may have been years in the making.

What is the most challenging aspect of your job?

I think in pictures and not in lists. Consequently, I’m fine with the plate spinning required in this job but I’m not as good with lists or authority. The upside of this is that I’ve never been shy of taking risks and the risks have always been worthwhile.

What do you like to do when you’re not at work?

I love to spend time with my wife and family, especially as we now also have our new Grandson, George. Getting out in the countryside and walking our dog is also a very important part of my day. Also, anything to do with motorcycles – riding them, cleaning them, and building them.

Are you an early bird or a night owl?

I’m most definitely an early bird. You can’t beat the light and the quiet first thing in the morning. My morning walk and the head space it gives me really sets me up for the day.
