August the most popular time to move home in the UK

Fri 4 October 2019

According to data from the Homeowners Alliance, August is the most popular time of year to move home – and has been for 12 years running.

Based on figures from the English Housing survey, there were 625,000 owner occupier moves in England annually in 2016-2017. This works out at approximately 1,700 moves per day!

When it comes to August itself, the Homeowners Alliance estimates that 75,000 families will be hopping into a moving van and making the trip to their new home.

So why August? Chief Executive of the HomeOwners Alliance, Paula Higgins, explains: “Many homeowners like to move during the school summer holidays so their children can settle into their new place in time for the new academic year, which is at the start of September across most of the UK.”

“It’s also a natural result of the spring bounce – when we see more people selling and buying homes. It can take until the summer to get through the home buying and selling process.”

Friday the most frequent moving day

The data showed that Friday was by far the most popular day to move home, with 27% of people selecting that as their moving day. This is a logical choice, with the weekend ahead to get settled into your new home and begin the unpacking process.

One Friday in August sees the biggest number of moves all year. On Friday 30th August this year approximately 6,500 moves are expected.
