If you weren’t already aware of the plans, the new North & East Melton Mowbray Distributor Road is underway. It has been at least 20 years since the additional highway was suggested by Leicestershire County Council (LCC) and years of delays have followed, with public consultations, tenders, and a pandemic contributing to this - but work has now started.
It is felt that the new road will bring huge benefits to Melton Mowbray once it is complete, serving hundreds of new homes needed by the growing town, as well as bring relief for the already busy town centre.
Andrew Robinson, director of Andrew Granger & Co’s professional department has been representing the landowners affected along the route for many years and says: “It’s a relief to see the scheme finally underway.
“Now our task changes from representation at design and consultation stages to representing the affected landowners through the build process.
“There are always unforeseen site issues and good liaison with Galliford Try (GT) who is building the road and LCC are key.
“We have already been out to solve several issues in consultation with GT and LCC. What can seem like inconsequential matters to the builders, can represent a major headache for farmers and by doing our job, we can hopefully alleviate the stress for our clients as much as possible.”
The £115m scheme is funded by the UK Government, Leicestershire County Council, the Leicester & Leicestershire Local Enterprise Partnership, and developer contributions and will deliver a 7.1km road with walking and cycling facilities.
The new road starts at Nottingham Road and goes North and East around the top side of Melton Mowbray. Having recently started the construction it is thought that the road will be usable by late 2025.
