Andrew Granger & Company Create New Wood for Client, Wyggeston’s Hospital

County, City and Borough Plant Trees to Create New Wood

On Saturday 8th May 2010 the Chairman of the Leicestershire County Council, Mr Roger Wilson, The Lord Mayor of Leicester, Roger Blackmore and the Mayor  of Oadby and Wigston Borough Council Kevin Lloydall joined together to plant a tree each in the new Wyggeston Quincentenary Wood.

The wood is the first project to celebrate the 500th birthday of the foundation of the Wyggeston’s Hospital in 2013.  The Hospital was founded following the grant of Royal Letters Patent from King Henry V111 to William Wyggeston, whose statue is on the clock tower in the centre of Leicester.  By the Letters William was allowed to create a hospital for 12 poor men and 12 poor women.  The word hospital means a place of hospitality and caring and the original building was on Peacock Lane near what is now Leicester Cathedra.

When the Hospital was founded it was referred to as the ‘new’ hospital of Leicester (Trinity Hospital another Almshouse in the city was founded in 1331).
